Countertenor Benno Schachtner stands out as one of the leading voices in his field, captivating audiences on concert stages and opera houses around the world with his engaging naturalness. Known for his grounded yet ethereal timbre, Schachtner is celebrated for his profound emotional interpretations of repertoire ranging from the Renaissance to contemporary music. His spontaneity and joy in the music’s unfolding moments, which are often unpredictable and unplanned, are particularly inspiring. With brilliant technique, a keen sense of interpretative nuance, and passionate delivery, he continually enchants his audience.
Schachtner’s artistry was significantly shaped by his mentors: Prof. G. Weinberger (Church Music, 2004-2009) at the Hochschule für Musik Detmold, and Prof. Ulrich Messthaler (Voice, 2010-2012) at the Schola Cantorum Basel. In 2020, he was appointed Professor of Historical Performance at the Hochschule für Künste Bremen, where he has since led an international class in Historical Performance Practice.
A central aspect of Schachtner’s musical teaching is the emphasis on honest interpretation, musical flexibility, and rich tonal coloration. He draws inspiration from nature, reflecting his deep passion for agriculture. In his hometown of Dietenheim, he manages a part-time agricultural enterprise.
Additionally, Schachtner is the founder and artistic director of the DIADEMUS Festival in his home region. He also leads the DIADEMUS vocalisten, DIADEMUS concertisten, and DIADEMUS chorakademie, contributing significantly to the cultural landscape through these initiatives.
